Gmelina arborea Roxb.ex Sm.

Dark brown trunk with pale brown blotches due to fallen flakes, Leaves opposite with long stalk, round with narrow tip, coated with soft hair. Flowers in clusters, at the end of twigs, fruits yellowish, fleshy and smells fruity.

  • Habitat: Common in the deciduous areas close to grasslands and rivers. Hills above 350-900m. Indian subcontinent

Medicinal Uses

Leaves demulcent, ingredient of “dasamula”. In Siddha used to cure diabetes mellitus, fainting, fever, leucorrhoea, pittam, vatam. Flowers provide high quality abundant nectar for honey bees. Whole plant is used to cure diseases of nervous system, oedema, cardiac diseases, stomachache, poisoning, piles etc. Wood is used to make furniture and frames.
